How do I become a... (TCP, LCT, Field Supervisor)

Wondering how to start a career in traffic control? We’ve laid it out in simple steps from becoming a certified Traffic Control Person (TCP), to working as a Lane Closure Technician (LCT), to becoming a Field Supervisor. Simply start at step one and the rest will follow!

How do I become a Traffic Control Person?

If you’re not certified your first step is to become certified.

  1. Contact Universal Health and Safety (or any other BCCSA certifying partner) to register for the next available TCP course
  2. Successfully complete the 2-day course
  3. Receive your TCP card!

If you’re already certified…

  1. Contact Universal Recruitment via phone at 1-844-944-4737 or email at recruiting@theuniversalgroup.ca
  2. Come in for an interview
  3. Complete an orientation
  4. Start a paid on-the-job training program with a mentor (one to three days)
  5. Head to work!

How do I become a Lane Closure Technician?

  1. Complete the steps above until you’ve earned 600-hours of experience (approximately three to four months)
  2. Request a performance review for promotion
  3. Come in for an interview
  4. Give us a copy of your driver’s abstract
  5. Complete an LCT assessment (online)
  6. Complete a driver’s classroom assessment (online)
  7. Complete a driver’s road assessment
  8. Start a paid on-the-job training program with a mentor (one to two weeks)
  9. Get your own truck!

How do I become a Field Supervisor?

  1. Complete the steps above until you’ve earned a combined 5-years of experience
  2. Complete Occupational First Aid courses (level II preferred)
  3. Wait for a Field Supervisor position to become available and then apply
  4. Come in for an interview
  5. Start a paid on-the-job training program with a mentor
  6. Plan your route!
